Which Softail is which
Harley merged the Dyna and Softail lines in 2018 onto one chassis with the Milwaukee-Eight engine. Here is the short version:
- Street Bob — the lightest, cheapest way into a Big Twin. Mini-apes, mid controls, solo seat. Easy to customize.
- Fat Bob — inverted front end, dual discs, fat tires, 2-1-2 exhaust. The sharpest handler of the group.
- Low Rider S — the performance pick. Milwaukee-Eight 114 or 117, moto bars, blacked out. Built to be ridden hard.
- Heritage Classic — lockable hard-sided bags, windshield, passenger seat. The Softail you take on a long weekend.
- Fat Boy — solid wheels, wide stance, the classic profile. More cruiser than carver.
- Breakout — long, low, 240 rear tire. A boulevard bike that turns heads more than corners.
Older Softails — Evo and Twin Cam bikes like the Slim, Deluxe and pre-2018 models — ride softer and cost less. They are a solid way into a Harley if the budget is tight.
What to check on a used Softail
On 2018-and-newer Milwaukee-Eight bikes, look for service records on the 1,000-mile and 10,000-mile intervals, check the rear mono-shock preload adjuster works, and listen for top-end noise on a cold start. On Twin Cam bikes, ask about cam chain tensioner history. On any used Harley, inspect the primary for leaks, check tire date codes, and confirm the title matches the VIN.
