Out-of-State Title Process: What to Expect
How It Works
When you finance a machine with us and you live out of state:
-
We are required to generate an Indiana Non-Resident Title.
-
This paper title is processed through the Indiana BMV and then sent directly to your lienholder (the bank or credit union that provided your loan).
What Happens Next
Once your lienholder receives the Indiana title:
-
They will forward it to your local DMV or Clerk’s Office.
-
This starts the registration process in your home state so you can receive your plates and registration.
Note: Some states may require you (or your lender) to submit a signed Title Transfer Request and/or a Power of Attorney (POA) to complete the registration. Be sure to check with your lienholder for your state’s requirements.
What You Need to Do
To help avoid delays, you are responsible for the following:
-
Contact your lienholder after the sale to ensure they received the Indiana title and are forwarding it to your local office.
-
Ask what paperwork they require for registration in your state.
-
Verify your contact info is current with your bank to prevent any processing delays.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
-
Out-of-state title transfers typically take longer than in-state due to additional steps and inter-agency communication.
-
Once we notify you that the title has been processed, wait 7–10 business days before checking with your lienholder.
-
If your title hasn’t arrived after that, contact us, and we’ll follow up with your lienholder for an update.
What We Collect From You at the Time of Sale
To initiate the process, you must provide:
-
Two valid proofs of residency (even if they share the same address)
-
Your Social Security card
-
Sign:
-
CommunityWide’s Title Transfer Request
-
Your state’s Power of Attorney form
-
Understanding the Process: Title vs. Registration
It’s important to know there are two separate steps:
-
Titling
We title the machine in your name with the bank's lien through the Indiana BMV. -
Registration
Your local BMV issues plates and registration after receiving the Indiana title from your lienholder.
